Giants

Using Bullinger’s King James Version Companion Bible (Kregel)

Providing a list of the individual names and also some tribal group names of the giant ones who were created by the sexual union between a human female, and a male angel.

As documented in the KJV Bible, Adam’s wife Eve (mother of all living) was to provide the seedline down through the son called Seth, and from patriarchal generation to another, the Messiah would be born from this particular well documented heritage. There were 70 generations from Adam to Jesus Christ.

However, there were certain beings called as “sons of God” who would come down to Earth and begin reproducing a hybrid being, that is half human and half angelic. These hybrids were called collectively as “Nephilim”. There was a first initial influx before the flood
of Noah, during the time of the patriarch Jared’s era (5th generation from Adam, Great-great-grandfather of Noah). The influx of these angles reproducing with human women would even continue on until after the flood, see below.

Genesis [6:4] “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”

Jude [6:6] “And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.”

These daughters of Adam, were impregnated by certain group of “sons of God”, which arrived onto this Earth against God’;s will. They left their habitat and created a mixed offspring with the human female mates. This action was a very severe sin for several reasons:

  1. These angles left the intended habitation aginst God’s will
    (see Jude [6:6]),
  2. They impregnated human women against God’s will, the mixing with other human male mates and propagating the angelic male genetics forward. With each succeeding generation the union produced a male hybrid that the Bible documents as “men of renown” and commonly referred to as “giants’. The souls of these hybrid giants are not born from heaven, from above. They are an unnatural being, and men were fearful of their presence.
  3. The ulterior motive and true intent by these rebellious angels was to
interfere against a foretold Messiah, the Christ. The genetic mutation being carried forward, would have prevented any branch of the Adamic family tree embedded of naturally producing a young child who would be our Savior. Satan and his angels know that the seedline of Adam and Eve would produce a Messiah that would “bruise” his head – see Genesis [3:15] as God curses satan for his works of deceptions of the Garden:

"And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her Seed; It shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise His [Christ's] heel."

Now is is revealed, satan understands what is going to happen eventually, and the woman will become called as “Eve” (the mother of all living) once Adam and she have left through the Garden gate.

However, Noah’s own close family was not affected by this ongoing mating of the angels. God would call on him to save he and his family from a flood of water that would inundate the part of the world where many of the Adamic daughters were living.

Genesis [6:8] “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.”

[ ed: These peoples will be removed from the land promised to Abraham by God, but not until Moses and Joshua are told to begin that effort by God. ]

Genesis [15:18] “In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying “Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river Euphrates:”

Genesis [15:19] “The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,”

Genesis [15:20] “And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,”

Genesis [15:21] “And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites,
and the Jebusites.”

[ed: Some notes made on the tribes listed above:

the Kenites (Cainite, descends from Cain, Abel’s half brother),
the Kenizzites (edomite, descend from Eliphaz, the oldest son
of Esau,
half-brother to Amalek),
the Kadmonites (likely Ishmaelite),
the Hittites (Heth),
the Perizzites (city area in Judah hills),
the Rephaims,
the Amorites,
the Canaanites, (all others not explicitly named),
the Girgashites
and the Jebusites (Genesis [15:19–21])
]

The complete allocation of this land for Abraham and his descendants
will occur during the upcoming millennial (1000 year) period of this second
Earth Age (eon). The entire balance of this area from the time of Abraham until today has not been wholly completed.

Continuing with the topic of giants, we will see additional notes of the mixing of the hybrid giants into other Hamite tribes. Ham was a son of Noah, yet in a few generations, some of Ham’ grandsons, through grandson Canaan would become mixed with the genetics of the “sons of God” angel beings.

Here below is the list of tribes defined in Genesis [15:19-21]. Note that some of these tribes are found in the decedent list of Ham’s sons of
Genesis [10:6-20] did NOT originate as a hybrid tribe, but some of them were mixed over generations, and each giant’s documented particular advent and actions are found in scripture.

Not all of these tribes will be explicitly referenced as to having their lands taken away from them, and provided to Israel people coming into Canaan lands after 40 years of desert “wandering”.

Canaan was 4th son of Ham – these are his sons:

Canaan
Sidon: 1 Kings [5:6]
(patriarch of Sidoni, Phoenician lebanon, city area of Sidon/Zidon)

Heth: Ezekiel [16:3]
(patriarch of Hittites between sidon (syria) and mountains near
the Jebus tribe)

Jebusite: Judges [1:21]
(patriarch was Jesbus, mountains near and of Jerusalem city area)

Amorite: Numbers [13:29]
(patriarch was Amor, northeast syria moving into babylonia)

Girgasite: Joshua [24:1]
(patriarch was Girgash, canaan near Sidoni)

Hivite: Judges [3:3]
(patriarch was Hiv, central canaan, also lebanon mountains
near mt. Hermon)

Arkite: Joshua [16:1-3]
(patriarch was Ark, central canaan, north lebanon)

Sinite
(patriarch was Sin, north phoeician canaan, lebanon north coast)

Arvadite: Ezekiel l[27:8]
(patriarch was Arvad, phoenician canaan, island off north syria)

Zemarite
(patriarch was Zemar, phoenician canaan, southwest syria city
of Sumra)

Hamathite: 2 Kings [17:24]
(patriarch was Hamat, north lebanon-syria, city area of Hamat)

[ ed:There is even record of an unnamed “Egyptian” being extraordinarily large in his physical stature: ]

1 Chronicles [11:23] “And he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian’s hand was a spear like a weaver’s beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptians hand, and slew him with his own spear.”

These angels began to first appear during the generation of Jared, the
great-great grandfather of Noah and the 5th generation from Adam.
This influx of angels to Earth is a transgression against God’s will and
by doing this act, these angles are now held away in “chains” and their fate is already judged and determined for true death of their very soul. Redemption through the Savior Christ is not an option for them.

They descended from Heaven onto Mount Hermon which is adjacent to
the northern tip of the Golan mountains which is in an area called “Bashan” and Mt. Hermon can be seen from Og’s capitol cities near Argob in Bashan’s southeastern part.

Again, emphasizing the verse Genesis [6:4] and how it infers that there was a first influx, before the flood, then also another influx after the flood.

Genesis [6:4] “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”

E.W. Bullinger’s Companion KJV Bible appendices have some very helpful
info on thes events:

of human women and the angelic “sons of God.

From the Companion Bible Appendix #25:
” It is certain that the second irruption took place before
Gen. 14, for there the Rephaim were mixed up with the five
nations or peoples, which include Sodom and Gomorrha,
and were defeated by the four kings under Chedorlaomer.
Their principal locality was evidently “Ashtaroth Karnaim”;
while the Emim were in the plain of Kiriathaim (Gen. [14:5]). “

Aramaic

The Hebrew word “Nephilim”, does have a very close resemblance to the Aramaic word “Nephila”, which is the Aramaic (of Aram, Aramean Syria) word for the constellation called “Orion”.

They were said to be descendants of Orion.

Other names that may have to do with the Orion are Chesil and Chesulloth.

Also, the Aramaic word “npyl” means “giant”.

The plural form of this Aramaic noun “npyl” is nephilin, which is equivalent to the Hebrew word “nephilim”.

Notice the use of “in” and then “im” in these 2 words. Aramaic masculine plurals have an “-in” ending, whereas Hebrew masculine plurals have an “-im” ending.

In Greek, “nephilim” is translated to the word “gegenes”. Greek Myths involving “Titans” (demi-gods), were categorized as “gegenes” beings.
The word “gegene” is Greek for “giant”.

Amorite cities
The Bible lists the five western Amorite kingdoms as Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon.

To the east are two more kingdoms considered as Amorite and they
are Hesbon and Bashan.

So if Bashan is considered as Amorite so would Og. In Amos [2:9]
we read:

Amos [2:9] “Yet destroyed I the Am’-or-ite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed the fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.”

So from this sentence this Amorite was a giant (most likely Og) and
therefore linking the Amorites with the Nephilim.

But Amorites lived in the lands to the east as well which would include Sumeria which is also mentioned by Amos. But these eastern Amorites are not considered as giants:

Anakim cities:

A mention of two towns in the land of Canaan. Kirjath-anab (AKA “Anab”) and Beth-Sepher (AKA “Kirjath Sepher” and AKA “Debir” ). Both of these cities are found in the book of Joshua in association of the Anakim giants.

Joshua [11:21] “At that time Joshua attacked and eliminated the Anakites
from the hill country from Hebron, Debir, Anab, and all the hill country of
Judah and Israel.”

Joshua [15:15] “And he went up thence to the inhabitants of Debir: and the nameof Debir before was Kirjath-Sepher.”

The third is a mention of Qiyen (Ken), a possible reference to the children of the Kenites (Hebrew ‘Qiyniy’), the descendants of Moses’ father in law as found in Judges [1:16]. Or it may be a reference to the Kenizites (Hebrew ‘Qeniziy’).

Joshua [14:6] “Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, “Thou knowest the thing that the Lord said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea.”

Joshua [14:12] “Now therefore give me this mountain whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fensed: if so be the Lord will be with me, Then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.”

Joshua [14:14] “Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.”

Joshua [14:15] “And the name of Hebron before was Kir-Jath-arba; which Arba was a great men among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.”

[ ed: Caleb was a “Kenizite”, but an explanation is needed, for truly Caleb
was from the tribe of Judah by heritage, but from the area known for being
of the descendants of the man Kanaz.

Caleb’s father was “Jephunneh” (#H3312), who was an Judite
( see Numbers [13:6] ).

The Kenezites were the clan whose name-father was “Kenaz”. Their land, along with that of their Canaanite tribes, was promised to Abram
( see Genesis [15:19] ).
To this clan belonged Caleb’s father, Jephunneh, (see Numbers [32:12], Joshua [14:6-14]) It had evidently been absorbed by the tribe of Judah.

Caleb was given the city of Hebron forever by Moses for obeying
the orders of God, while many of the Israelites had failed and doubted God’s
support for fighting the inhabitants of Canaan.Kir-Jath-arba, a former city of the Anakites, and Arba, the father of Anak was therefore a patriarch of the Anakite tribe.

Kirjath Arba (Hebron) was also closely linked to Beth-Sepher (Debir), the city mentioned in the ‘Papyrus Anastasi’ letter (see more of this letter under the paragraph titled “Egyptian Records” farther below).

Joshua [15:13] “And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron.”

Joshua [15:14] “And Caleb drove thence the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.”

Joshua [15:15] “And he went up thence to the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher.”

Joshua [15:16] “And Caleb said, “He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.”

Joshua [15:17] “And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.”

[ed: Caleb’s brother, Othniel, the son of Kenaz (Hebrew ‘Qenaz’), took the city of Debir in battle. So both Hebron and Debir, former cities of the Anakim, where under the control of the Kenizzites.]

[ ed: Kirjath Arba was named after Arba who was the father of Anak and that Caleb, the Kenizzite, drove out three Anakites. They were named
Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, who were the descendants of Anak. In other words, three different rulers, of three tribes of Anakim.]

Watchers

Watchers is the Biblical name and Anunnaki is the Sumerian name.
The rebellion of these so-called angels is because of satan’s leadership in his effort to unseat God by asserting himself instead, and becoming mankind’s overlord. This man of inequity, satan, is also known by his ancient name “Azazel”.

Daniel [4:13] “I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven.”

[ed: “Watcher” #H5894 from #5782 essentially an awakened angel, eyes open, to watch (derived from the Greek egregoris or grigori).]

“Watchers” can be translated with several shades of meaning, and depending on the translator means “observers” or “sentinels, sleepless ones”; whether they are vigilant or simply curious, they watch.

The “Watchers” were a specific race of divine beings known in Hebrew as

” nun resh ‘ayin, ‘irin’ ” ( ” resh ‘ayin, ‘ir’ ” ) in singular,

meaning ‘those who watch’ or ‘those who are awake’, which is translated
into Greek as “grhgoroi”, “egregoris” or “grigori”, meaning ‘watchers’.

Nephilim

The Hebrew word “Nephilim” #H5303 Hebrew root word “naphal,” which means “to fall,” or “fallen ones.” These angel-human hybrids of Genesis [6] are the factual basis for the “gods” of many ancient cultures arising from many locations throughout the Earth.

Bryan T. Huie ( http://www.aristotle.net/~bhuie/gen6sons.htm )

“These giants are often mentioned in the early books of the Old Testament until the last of them were finally killed off. The word nephilim only appears twice in the canonical scriptures at: (Gen [6:4], Num [13:33] ).

While being perhaps the very oldest book by authorship, is the book of Job, and the word “gibbor” Job [16:14] appears, and also in other verses of other books.

The word “rephaim” also appear after the flood in a 2nd influx of the “sons of God”.

( Gen. [14:5], [15:20],
  Deu. [2:11,20], [3:11-13],
  Jos. [12:4], [13:12], [15:8], [17:15], [18:16],
  2 Sam. [[5:18,22], [21:16,18,20,22], [23:13],
  1 Chr. [11:15], [14:9], [20:4,6,8],
  Isa. [17:5], [26:14],
)

The post-flood Nephilim were known by the proper names of Rephaim, Emim, Anakim, and Zamzummim.

Rephaim

Chedorlaomer (#H3540) was a ruling king of elamite Persia. In Genesis [14], we see that he would attack the Canaanite kings who had stopped paying their tributes of wealth.
The rebelling kings had provided tribute for 12 years, but stopped upon the 13th year.
In the 14th year, Chedorlaomer attacked each of these kings in battle, and would win against all of them (see Genesis [14:5-12].)

There were Rephaim at Ashtoroth-Karnaim in Geshur. There were Zuzim at Ham in Argob. His great army worked its way down the eastern side of the Jordan Valley to battle the Emim at Shaveh-Kiriathiam in Moab and the Horim in Seir.

Again the Rephaim in southern Canaan at Hazazon-Tamar fought Chedorlaomer force but to no avail.

Now on the west side of the Jordan Valley Chedorloamer turned his armies
against the Amalekites and the Amorites who lived in Chatzatzon Tamar.

The Bible names these Nephilim tribes, with the Rephaim being the most notable, as the Anakin, Avim, Emim, Gibborim, Horim, Zamzummim and the Zuzim (and others). They had a king Og of Bashan , a Rephaim, who according to folklore slept on a huge bed which had a frame of iron. It was about fourteen feet long and six feet wide.
(See Deut [3:11]).

*To note that all giants were “gibborim” (mighty men), but not all
gibborim were necessarily true giants. “gibbor” base words are used in
other parts of the Hebrew scriptures aside the context of “giant” hybrids.

King Og was the King of Bashan which includes the area of the Golan Heights. A certain complex composed of stacked rocks located in the Golan Heights is called “Gilgal Rephaim” is built. It is the high ground on which many dolmens are also built. King Og is presumably from the Iron Age the time of the construction of the cairn.

Its Hebrew name of Gilgal Refaim means ‘wheel of giants’.

Some say Gilgal Rephaim was built first as an astronomical observatory and cultist religious center, while pother suggest it was used to place dead bodies there for the vultures to clean away. Any any event, sometime later was an elaborate cairn for burial, was built at the very center.

This structure is made of piles of thousands of smaller basalt rocks that together, weigh over 40,000 tons.

Hebron

Abraham was living in or very near Hebron which was built by the Nephilim Arba, father to Anak. Originally this city was named Kirjath-arba and later became Hebron. You can read about it in Numbers [13]. Also according to Wikipedia there is one of the rare concentrations of dolmens within Israel in the hills of Judah in the vicinity of Hebron.

Egyptian Records

Now, what is really fascinating is that these giants are also mentioned in Egyptian records, as well their height. An artifact also mentions two of the cities where they resided which match the Biblical account.

One document is known as ‘Papyrus Anastasi 1,’ and is dated to the Egyptian Ramesside Period. The writer of the letter, who apparently was familiar with the geography and history of Canaan and had been on an expeditions there, is mocking the one who he is writing to for not having any knowledge of Canaan. The letter states the following:

” Come let me tell thee of other towns, which are above them. Thou hast not gone to the land of Kadesh, Tekhes, Kurmeren, Temenet, Deper, Idi, or Herenem. Thou hast not beheld Kirjath-anab (ANAB) and Beth-Sepher (Kirjath Sepher- Debir.) . . . Pray teach me concerning the appearance of Qiyen (Ken); acquaint me with Rehob; explain Beth-shael and Tereqel. The stream of Jordan, how is it crossed? . . .

( more text below, the use of “/” is to denote an undecipherable characters/word. )

Behold the ///////// is in a ravine two thousand cubits deep, filled with
boulders and pebbles. Thou drawest back(?), thou graspest the bow,
thou dost //////. thy left hand, thou causest the great ones to look.
Their eyes are good, thy hand grows weak(?). Abdt km Ari mhr nam.

Thou makest the name of every Maher, officers of the land of Egypt.
Thy name becomes like (that of) Qedjerdi, the chief of Isser, when the
hyena found him in the balsam-tree.

The (?) narrow defile is infested with Shasu (bedouins) concealed
beneath the bushes; some of them are of four cubits or of five cubits,
from their noses to feet, fierce of face, their heart is not mild, and they
hearken not to coaxing.

see ore info at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papyrus_Anastasi_I

There are three interesting facts about this passage. First is the height of those who lived within this valley. An Egyptian cubit we know translates into 53.5 centimeters which is 20.6 inches. So the men referred to here were described as being somewhere between 7′ and 8′-6″ from nose to heel in height. Add another 6″ from nose to the top of the head and they were between 7′-6″ and 9′ in height.

It was a common practice in Egypt to write the names of their enemies, from foreign lands on pottery bowls or figurines. Once they were finished they would smash them believing that it would magically curse their enemies.

One such broken pottery fragment lists the names of three men who were rulers of the Iy-‘anaq, possibly referring to the Anak or Anakim.

Another interesting fact about this artifact is that the second ruler’s name was Abi-Yamimu, which contains the word Yamim and is phonetically equivalent to ‘Emim.’ According to Deuteronomy [2], the people of Moab called the Anakim, the Emim (Hebrew ‘Eymiym’.)

The translated text below is from James Pritchard’s book titled –

'Ancient near Eastern texts relating to the Old Testament’ AKA 'ANET'

” The ruler of Iy-‘anaq, Erum, and all the trusted men who are with him.
The ruler of Iy-‘anaq, Abi-yamimu, and all the trusted men who are
with him.
The ruler of Iy-‘anaq, Akirum, and all the trusted men who are with him.”

Deuteronomy[2:10] “The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great,
and many, and tall, as the Anakims;”

Deuteronomy [2:11] “Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims;
the Moabites call them Emims.”

[ ed: To note that the word “erum” is NOT the Hebrew word but rather an apparent lost city name that likely existed in the Arabian area.

Ubar (Aram, Iram, Irum, Irem, Erum) the name of a geographic location –
a city or an area, or a tribe, see :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iram_of_the_Pillars
]

Deuteronomy [2:19] “And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.”

Deuteronomy [2:20] “(That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;”

Deuteronomy [2:21] “A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the Lord destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:”
